Insulation
The Importance of Responsible Retrofit
Understanding Insulation Considerations
All properties are different. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. There are many factors to consider before insulating our homes.
Some insulation materials are vapour open (or vapour permeable). This means that moisture vapour is allowed to pass through the material, but this can still reduce the air quality inside the property. It is very important to make responsible considerations to ventilation when trying to better insulate our homes.
A common way to choose between different insulation materials is by it’s U-value. The U-value is the rate of transfer of heat through any given material or structure. The units of measurement are W/m²K. The calculations can seem a little daunting. As a guide, it is important to remember, the lower the U-value, the better the insulation performance.
The government have building standards to guide us (PAS2035), which outlines how retrofit projects should be managed and delivered.
Why Should You Better Insulate…
Installing better insulation in your property will pave way for new heating technologies such as air source and ground source heating and solar energy. -Thus future-proofing your property and potentially increasing the overall property value.
Installing loft insulation and draught-proofing windows and doors are an obvious and quickest fix. Simply doing this can reduce your energy bills with minimal disruption to your property.
